 Outreach Opportunities

Outreach is a Primary Focus at SMM.

Sample of a Giving Opportunity:
New Socks  for
Boulder County Cares

Imagine how it would feel to endlessly go without socks – just a pair of socks
can make a big difference to a person living without the benefit of a roof over their head. In conjunction with the traditional foot washing at our Maundy Thursday service, we would like to give new socks to be distributed via Boulder County Cares. In addition to new socks, please feel free to donate gently used or new hats and scarves.

Outreach projects help fulfill SMM's mission to “share God’s love in our community.”

The Outreach Committee organizes monthly mini-projects, arranges Lenten Soup Supper programs organizations. A few projects are below:
  • A Christmas toy collection for the children at Hogar Infantil Orphanage in Mexico is the longest continuous outreach activity for the St. Mary’s community.
  • Boulder Shelter for the Homeless is another hallmark of St. Mary‘s outreach program. Twice a month parishioners cook and serve dinner at the shelter. Sign-up sheets may be found in the Information Kiosk.
  • Annual mission trips provide another important outreach opportunity. Funding is provided for some of the general trip expenses as well as materials for the work to be done. Students in grades 8-12 as well as adults embark on a week-long trip to an impoverished area (such as Juarez, Mexico or Bluff, Utah) to build homes, to work with children. In 2008 the trip was to Windsor to help in any way possible after a tornado devastated the area.
  • A perpetual food drive was begun in 2005 for ongoing donations of non-perishable food and toiletries. Donations can be brought to church any time the church is open. These donations support Community Food Share, which, in turn, supports 85 nonprofit agencies in Boulder and Broomfield counties.
  • St. Mary Magdalene has been a site for the 9Health Fair since 1998 with over 350 participants.
  • Rental of church space to the Gunbarrel Preschool began in 1998 with a continuing lease until 2010. Affordable preschool experience is offered to children in the Gunbarrel neighborhood. 20 scholarships are available for children who financially would be unable to attend preschool.
  • The annual garage sale (in the parking lot) began in 2004 with all proceeds going to Outreach ministries and items not selling donated to organizations who are helping those in need.
  • The annual Silent Auction with all proceeds going to Outreach ministries.
  • A capital campaign for the Colorado Haiti Project in 2006 raised $50,000.
  • Participation in Boulder County’s Adopt A Road began in 2005 with parishioners being responsible for Jay Road between 28th Street and 51st Street for clean-up once in the spring and once in the fall.
